Savor Spaghetti Bolognese, a classic Italian pasta dish made with a rich meat sauce, perfect for a comforting family meal.

Introduction

Spaghetti Bolognese, known in Italy as "ragù alla bolognese," is a traditional Italian dish originating from Bologna. This hearty pasta dish features a rich sauce made with ground meat, tomatoes, onions, carrots, and aromatic herbs, simmered to perfection. Often served over al dente spaghetti, Bolognese is beloved for its comforting flavors and satisfying texture. It’s a staple in Italian cuisine and a favorite among families worldwide, making it an ideal choice for gatherings or a cozy dinner.

Ingredients

  • 400 g (14 oz) spaghetti
  • 300 g (10 oz) ground beef or a mix of beef and pork
  • 1 medium onion, finely chopped
  • 1 medium carrot, finely chopped
  • 1 celery stalk, finely chopped
  • 2 cloves garlic, minced
  • 400 g (14 oz) canned crushed tomatoes
  • 2 tablespoons tomato paste
  • 1/2 cup red wine (optional)
  • 1 teaspoon dried oregano
  • 1 teaspoon dried basil
  • Salt and freshly ground black pepper to taste
  • 3 tablespoons olive oil
  • Grated Parmesan cheese (for serving)
  • Fresh basil leaves (for garnish, optional)

Instructions

  1. Cook the Spaghetti:

    • Bring a large pot of salted water to a boil. Cook the spaghetti according to package instructions until al dente. Reserve 1 cup of pasta water, then drain the spaghetti and set aside.
  2. Prepare the Sauce:

    • In a large skillet or saucepan, heat 3 tablespoons of olive oil over medium heat. Add the chopped onion, carrot, and celery. Sauté for about 5-7 minutes until the vegetables are softened. Add the minced garlic and cook for an additional minute.
  3. Brown the Meat:

    • Increase the heat to medium-high and add the ground beef (or beef and pork mixture). Cook until browned, breaking it apart with a spatula. This should take about 5-7 minutes.
  4. Add Liquids and Simmer:

    • Stir in the tomato paste, crushed tomatoes, and red wine (if using). Add the dried oregano and basil, and season with salt and pepper. Bring the sauce to a gentle simmer. Reduce the heat to low and let it cook for about 30-40 minutes, stirring occasionally, until the sauce thickens and the flavors meld.
  5. Combine Pasta and Sauce:

    • Once the sauce is ready, add the drained spaghetti to the sauce. Toss to combine, adding reserved pasta water a little at a time if needed to achieve your desired consistency.
  6. Serve:

    • Plate the spaghetti Bolognese, garnishing with grated Parmesan cheese and fresh basil leaves if desired. Serve hot.

Health Notes

  • Spaghetti Bolognese can be high in calories and sodium due to the meat and cheese. To make it healthier, consider using lean ground meat, reducing the amount of cheese, or adding extra vegetables to the sauce.

Serving Suggestions

  • Serve Spaghetti Bolognese with a side salad and garlic bread for a complete meal. A glass of red wine pairs well with this hearty dish.

Tips

  • Quality Ingredients: Use high-quality ground meat and canned tomatoes for the best flavor. Fresh herbs can also elevate the dish.
  • Make Ahead: The Bolognese sauce can be made in advance and stored in the refrigerator for up to 3 days or frozen for up to 3 months. The flavors improve with time.
  • Pasta Cooking Tip: Always cook the pasta in well-salted water for optimal flavor. Test for doneness a minute or two before the package instructions indicate.
  • Variations: Feel free to customize your Bolognese by adding ingredients like mushrooms, bell peppers, or even a splash of cream for richness.
